The bolo khatso represents the beams and rafters of the upper levels of the first temples built in Tibet, which protruded through the walls and were elaborately decorated.

As construction methods evolved the bolo khatso remained as a distinguishing traditional feature. It is attached above and below the pembe frieze (a dark maroon band that is a distinguishing feature of Tibetan temples).

The Dzogchen Beara Temple will be adorned with 400 metres of bolo khatso, along the pembe frieze and underneath the copper roofs.

The bolo khatso are designed based on careful measurements taken at Lerab Ling adjusted for the scale of the Dzogchen Beara temple. The team made mockups to position and ensure correct shapes and sizes. The decorations will be be manufactured from glass-reinforced concrete formed in silicone moulds.
